Font Management with Extensis Suitcase

Fonts are an important part of any designer's creative arsenal. Unfortunately, fonts also can quickly become completely out of control. It doesn't matter whether you use a Mac or PC, if you have a lot of fonts loaded, they can slow down your system and potentially cause instability.

Many people have used Extensis Suitcase at one time or another because the company has been in the font management business for a long time. Font management used to be significantly more complicated than it is today. On the Mac, Tiger's built-in Font Book application lets you organize, activate, and deactivate fonts. With choices like these, you may wonder whether you need something like Suitcase anymore.

However, these free applications are not particularly robust. For creative professionals who deal with literally hundreds of fonts every day, the current version of Suitcase, called Fusion, is worth the money. On the Mac, Fusion lets you activate and deactivate fonts "on the fly" so as you move from one project to another, you don't get a lot of messages about missing font files. You don't have to move files or restart programs. Instead, you can tell Suitcase to determine what font you need and activate it for you automatically.

On Windows machines, Suitcase lets you create font sets. You can group your sets any way you want, such as by job or type. Once you create your font sets, you can easily activate or deactivate them.

Whether you use either a Windows or Mac system, Suitcase only activates the fonts you need at a given time. This eliminates font conflicts and saves system resources. You also can preview fonts with Suitcase. Even though many shareware programs offer this feature, many of them are buggy and only work with TrueType fonts.

The bottom line is that if you're a "font-o-holic," Suitcase can help you manage your addiction.
